Physiology. cGMP is synthesized from guanosine triphosphate (GTP) by the enzyme guanylate cyclase. It has a central function as a second messenger in signal pathways. It affects relaxation of blood vessel and smooth muscle cells and is involved in the regulation of the insulin level and of photoreceptors in the eye.
