Study type: Medical/biological study (experimental study)

Effects of low intensity static electromagnetic radiofrequency fields on leiomyosarcoma and smooth muscle cell lines med./bio.

Published in: Hell J Nucl Med 2006; 9 (3): 167-172

Aim of study (acc. to author)

This in vitro study was performed to investigate the athermal effects of a low frequency electromagnetic field on rat leiomyosarcoma cells and smooth muscle cells.

Background/further details

The experiments were carried out with leiomyosarcoma cells which were isolated from tumors (artificially induced via a benzopyrene injection) of 15 Wistar rats. To evaluate the leiomyosarcoma cells potential for metastasis their ability to aggregate platelets was investigated. The smooth muscle cells were isolated from the rats aorta.
The experiments were repeated five times.

Endpoint

Exposure

Exposure Parameters
Exposure 1: 10–120 kHz
Exposure duration: continuous for 45 min

General information

Electromagnetic resonance fingerprints (492 frequencies) of LSC and SMC were recorded before and after their exposure to EMF (10 Hz to 1 MHz).

Exposure 1

Main characteristics
Frequency 10–120 kHz
Type
Exposure duration continuous for 45 min
Additional info A total of 492 frequencies were used that were derived from a transformation of the electromagnetic resonance fingerprints.
Modulation
Modulation type cf. additional info
Additional info

The electromagnetic resonance fingerprints were modulated using the proper software.

Exposure setup
Exposure source
  • Multi Channel Dynamic Exciter (MCDE)
Setup Six Petri dishes with 10 ml of medium were placed into a Faraday apparatus for exposure.
Sham exposure A sham exposure was conducted.
Additional info LSC and SMC cultures were exposed at 72 and 120 h from zero time. After freezing in liquid nitrogen and unfreezing, LSC cultures were again exposed after 24 and 48 h.

Main outcome of study (acc. to author)

The exposure to low frequency electromagnetic field of leiomyosarcoma cells decreased their cell proliferation and induced apoptosis. Investigations of the survived leiomyosarcoma cells after exposure showed resistance to electromagnetic field exposure, indicated by regain of cell proliferation. The leiomysarcoma cells maintained their potential for metastasis.
The smooth muscle cells were not affected by the electromagnetic field exposure.
