Study type: Medical/biological study (experimental study)

Study of the influence of magnetic field on some biological characteristics of Zea mais med./bio.

Published in: J Central Euro Agric 2002; 3 (2): 89-94

Aim of study (acc. to author)

To study the effects of an exposure to magnetic fields on the growth and development of maize.

Background/further details

5 groups of maize seeds were examined (25 seeds per group): 1.) control group, 2.) 10 minutes of exposure 3.) 15 minutes of exposure, 4.) 20 min of exposure and 5.) 30 min of exposure.
20 seeds (per group? All together? Out of the 25 stated above? Remark EMF-Portal: not clear) have been soaked in 20 ml water. After 24 hours, the seeds were taken and the water extract was analyzed regarding absorption and specific conductivity. It was supposed that changes in these parameters are due to a substance diffusion through the seed coat.

Main outcome of study (acc. to author)

The exposed maize seeds showed an increased germination, a higher weight and the seedlings were significant taller than those of the control group (strongest effects following 10 minutes exposure). The absorption and the specific electroconductivity in water extracts of exposed maize seeds were increased compared to the control group.
The authors conclude that exposure of maize seeds to magnetic fields could promote the development and the growth of the seedlings.
