[Growth behaviour of human leukemia cells] med./bio.

Wachstumsverhalten von humanen Leukämiezellen

Published in: Edition Wissenschaft 1995; 1: 3-12
Journal not peer-reviewed

Aim of study (acc. to author)

To investigate the effects of high frequency electromagnetic fields on growth behaviour of human leukemia cells in vitro. Furthermore the specific release (i.e appearence in supernatant) of the enzyme thymidine kinase was investigated.

Chamber A constant temperature of 37 °C ± 0.1 °C in the experiment was maintained by an oil thermostat system.
Setup Test tubes with cell suspensions were placed in a Plexiglas sample holder connected to the oil thermostat and were positioned at an angle of 45° by means of a Styrofoam holder.
Sham exposure A sham exposure was conducted.
Additional info An identical sample holder was used to position the control cells inside a shielding RF-box.

Main outcome of study (acc. to author)

Doubling time and thymidine kinase release were not significantly altered due to electromagnetic field exposure. Therefore a possible cancerogenic effect of electromagnetic fields as used in this study could not be determined.
