Immunology. A family of glycoproteins belonging to the cytokines which has a role in fighting viral infections. They prevent viral replication, inhibit proliferation of normal and malignant cells, and show several other immunomodulatory functions.

There are several types of interferons, including interferon-alpha, -beta, and -gamma.
