Biochemistry. A cytokine produced by activated macrophages and monocytes. TNF-alpha (cachectin) has a wide range of inflammatory actions, wound healing, haematopoiesis, and immune response and the ability to destroy tumor cells. TNF-beta is mainly a local mediator of inflammatory actions (e.g., activating neutrophil granulocytes).
