Biochemistry. A group of organic substances that are necessary in trace amounts for the normal metabolic functioning of the body. They occur in many foods. They may be water-soluble (vitamin B complex and vitamin C) or fat-soluble (vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin F und vitamin K). They usually serve as components of coenzyme systems.
