Pharmacology. An extremely poisonous alkaloid obtained from the Indian tree (Strychnos nux vomica) which causes excitation of all portions of the central nervous system by blocking postsynaptic inhibition of neural impulses. It is a specific blocking agent of the amino acid transmitter glycine.
