pilocarpine

Chemistry. An alkaloid extracted from the leaves of the jaborandi (Pilocarpus pennatifolius) which acts as a stimulant of the parasympathetic nervous system. Pilocarpine is used to induce sweating, promote salivation, and pupil constriction (miosis). It is used as a miotic and an atropin antagonist and in the treatment of glaucoma, uremia, and edema.
