glutamic acid

German: Glutaminsäure
Japanese: グルタミン酸

Biochemistry. Abbr. Glu. A non-essential amino acid occurring in proteins. It is the most common excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. It is involved in amino acid metabolism and binds excess ammonia as a product of protein degradation forming glutamine.
Glutamic acid is negatively charged at physiological ph value, therefore it is often called glutamate.
