Biochemistry. Abbr. Asp. A non-essential amino acid that is a component of proteins. It is found in animals and plants, especially in sugar cane and sugar beets. It acts as a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system.
Aspartic acid is negatively charged at physiological ph value, therefore it is often called aspartate.
