Pharmacology. A group of tranquilizers (such as diazepam, chlordiazepoxide) having similar pharmacological actions, including anxiolytic, muscle relaxing and sedative and hypnotic effects. Benzodiazepines are used as tranquilizers and in the treatment of epilepsy.
