Study type: Medical/biological study (experimental study)

Low power density microwave radiation induced early changes in rabbit lens epithelial cells med./bio.

Published in: Chin Med J 2001; 114 (12): 1290-1294

Aim of study (acc. to author)

To study whether low power density microwave irradiation can induce irreversible changes in rabbit eye lens epithelial cells and the mechanisms of these changes.

Endpoint

Exposure

Exposure Parameters
Exposure 1: 2.45 GHz
Exposure duration: continuous for 3 h
Exposure 2: 2.45 GHz
Exposure duration: continuous for 3 h

Exposure 1

Main characteristics
Frequency 2.45 GHz
Exposure duration continuous for 3 h
Modulation
Modulation type unspecified
Exposure setup
Exposure source
Distance between exposed object and exposure source 0.43 m
Setup The rabbits were kept at a room temperature of 25°C. Their heads were fixed so that the distance between the exposed eye and the microwave generator was kept constant at 43 cm. One eye was exposed while the other eye served as control. The eye used for control was shielded by covering it with a copper grid cloth. The rabbits were conscious and their eyes were open during the whole experiment.

Exposure 2

Main characteristics
Frequency 2.45 GHz
Exposure duration continuous for 3 h
Modulation
Modulation type unspecified
Exposure setup
Exposure source
Distance between exposed object and exposure source 0.43 m

Main outcome of study (acc. to author)

Lots of the epithelial cells were in the initial phase of apoptosis in the 5 mW/cm² microwave irradiation group. A large number of cells became secondary necrotic cells, and severe damage could be revealed in the group exposed to 10 mW/cm² microwave irradiation.
Low power densities of microwave irradiation can induce irreversible damage to rabbit eye lens epithelial cells.
