Study type: Medical/biological study (experimental study)

Exposure to ELF-pulse modulated X band microwaves increases in vitro human astrocytoma cell proliferation med./bio.

Published in: Histol Histopathol 2009; 24 (12): 1551-1561

Aim of study (acc. to author)

To study whether exposure to microwave pulses in the X band range can induce cytotoxic effects on human astrocytoma cells.

Background/further details

Exposure experiments were replicated five times keeping cells in culture for 15, 30, 60 min and 24 h.

Main outcome of study (acc. to author)

The data showed that cytoskeleton proteins, cell morphology and cell viability were not modified by exposure. A statistically significant increased cell proliferation rate was found under 24 h microwave exposure (both exposure experiments). An increased expression of connexin 43 proteins was found in exposed samples (24 h exposure, both experiments).
