Response of Caenorhabditis elegans to wireless devices radiation exposure med./bio.

Published in: Int J Radiat Biol 2015; 91 (3): 286-293

Aim of study (acc. to author)

The effects of exposure of Caenorhabditis elegans to different radio frequency electromagnetic fields (DECT, WiFi, GSM) on growth, fertility, lifespan, chemotaxis, short-term memory and stress should be investigated.

Background/further details

Worms of different strains were distributed in one of the following groups: 1) DECT exposure, 2) DECT sham exposure, 3) WiFi exposure, 4) WiFi sham exposure, 5) GSM exposure and 6) GSM sham exposure. Several tests with different strains (wild type, age- and stress-sensitive strains (DR1572, DR26, TK22 and RB864), model strains for neurodegenerative diseases (NL5901 for Parkinson's disease and CL4176 for Alzheimer's disease) and GFP-transgenic strains (CL2070, CF1553, SJ4005, LG333, LD1171 and CL2166)) were conducted in the groups. All tests were performed at least twice.

Main outcome of study (acc. to author)

No significant differences were found between the exposed groups 1, 3 and 5 and sham exposed groups 2, 4 and 6, respectively, in any test.
The authors conclude that an exposure of Caenorhabditis elegans to radio frequency electromagnetic fields from DECT, WiFi and GSM sources has no effect on the investigated parameters of the study under the given conditions.
