Study type: Medical/biological study (experimental study)

The effects of a 50-Hz magnetic field on the cardiovascular system in rats med./bio.

Published in: J Radiat Res 2016; 57 (6): 627-636

Aim of study (acc. to author)

The effects of chronic exposure of rats to a 50 Hz magnetic field on the cardiovascular system should be investigated.

Background/further details

Male rats were divided into 2 groups (n=64 each): 1) exposure to the magnetic field and 2) sham exposure.

Exposure Parameters
Exposure 1: 50 Hz
Exposure duration: intermittent 20 hours/day for 24 weeks

Type
Exposure duration intermittent 20 hours/day for 24 weeks
Exposure setup
Exposure source
Chamber polycarbonate ventilated cages (45 cm x 20 cm x 35 cm, L x W x H) with room temperature of 22-25°C and relative humidity of 45-55%
Setup exposure system consisted of an exposure device and a plastic rack, both made of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene plastic; the exposure device had five layers (200 cm x 100 cm x 200 cm, L x W x H) with a layer-to-layer distance of 35 cm; inside the exposure device, a plastic rack (140 cm x 70 cm x 200 cm, L x W x H) with four floors was placed; 24 plastic cages with 2-3 rats each were placed inside the system; bronze wires generated the uniform magnetic field; the wiring ratio of the five coils was 2:1:1:1:2 and the 3% uniformity area of each floor was 150 cm x 50 cm (L x W) and over the whole rack, uniformity was 5.2%; sound and temperature from the exposure system were close to those in the environment; exposure room was lacking other electric devices, e.g., computers and daylight lamps were kept far away from the system
Sham exposure A sham exposure was conducted.
Additional info currents in coils were in opposite directions in sham exposure system; exposure and sham exposure systems were located in separated and non-adjacent rooms with similar conditions

Main outcome of study (acc. to author)

No significant differences were found between the exposure and sham-exposure group.
The authors conclude that there were no effects of chronic exposure of rats to a 50 Hz magnetic field on the cardiovascular system.
