Study type: Technical/dosimetric study (experimental study)

Acute and chronic effects of exposure to a 1-mT magnetic field on the cytoskeleton, stress proteins, and proliferation of astroglial cells in culture med./bio.

Published in: Environ Res 2005; 98 (3): 355-362

Aim of study (acc. to author)

To examine the effects of exposure to magnetic fields on astroglial cells in culture.

Background/further details

1) The level of stress proteins HSP25, HSP60, and HSP70 and the cytoskeletal proteins actin and GFAP were determined after exposure to a 1-mT sinusoidal or static magnetic field or combined magnetic field for 1 hour. 2) The effect on the proteins after exposure to combined static/sinusoidal magnetic field for 1, 2, and 4 hours was examined. 3) The effect of a chronic (11-day) exposure to a combined magnetic field on the proliferation of cultured astroglial cells was investigated.

Main outcome of study (acc. to author)

The results suggest that exposure to sinusoidal magnetic field, static magnetic field, or combined magnetic field (1 mT) has no significant effects on the level of cytoskeletal and stress proteins or on proliferation of astroglial cells in culture.
