Study type: Medical/biological study (experimental study)

The effect of exposure duration on the biological activity of mobile telephony radiation med./bio.

Published in: Mutat Res Genet Toxicol Environ Mutagen 2010; 699 (1-2): 17-22

Aim of study (acc. to author)

To study the effects of different durations of a single, daily exposure (ranging from 1 min. up to 21 min.) to the two established digital mobile phone systems (GSM 900 MHz and DCS 1800 MHz), on the reproductive capacity of the insect Drosophila melanogaster.

Background/further details

Each exposure/sham exposure group consisted of ten female and ten male newly emerged flies kept in separate vials for the first 48 h. After the 48 h, when both males and females of each group were sexually mature, they were put together (10 pairs) in another glass vial and they were allowed to mate and lay eggs for the next 72 h.

Main outcome of study (acc. to author)

The data showed that the reproductive capacity decreased almost linearly with increasing exposure durations to both GSM 900 MHz and DCS 1800 MHz irradiation, suggesting that short-term exposures to these irradiations have cumulative effects on living organisms. Additionally, these results showed that GSM 900 MHz was slightly more bioactive than DCS 1800 MHz, at the same exposure durations and under equal irradiation intensities, as shown in previous experiments of the authors (see "related articels").
