Pentoxifylline and electromagnetic field improved bone fracture healing in rats

The effects of exposure of rats to a 50 Hz magnetic field or pentoxifylline and the effects of co-exposure on bone fracture healing should be investigated.

Pentoxifylline is a phosphodiesterase inhibitor, which has a positive effect on bone formation. Consequentially, a positive effect on bone fracture healing was hypothesized.
80 male rats with an experimental femur fracture were randomly divided into the following groups (n=20 each): 1) exposure to the magnetic field, 2) intraperitoneal injection of pentoxifylline (50 mg/kg/day), 3) co-exposure to the magnetic field and pentoxifylline, 4) control group (no exposure). After 21 days and 30 days, 10 rats of each group were killed and investigated, respectively. Four slides from each fracture were examined.

Bone healing was significantly increased after 21 days and 30 days in rats exposed to the magnetic field (group 1) or treated with pentoxifylline (group 2) compared to the control group (group 4). However, co-exposure (group 3) did not show any significant difference compared to the control group.
The authors conclude that exposure of rats to a 50 Hz magnetic field or pentoxifylline alone might have positive effects on bone fracture healing. However, co-exposure does not seem to have any positive effect.
