Morphological changes indicating differentiation into cartilage cells were more evident and earlier in cells treated with pulsed magnetic fields compared with the untreated ones. The expression of typ II collagen and the secretion of proteoglycans were significantly increased in the exposed cell cultures compared to the untreated cell cultures.
The authors conclude that exposure of human mesenchymal stem cells to pulsed extremely low frequency magnetic fields could enhance cell differentiation into cartilage cells.
