Study type: Medical/biological study (experimental study)

No effects of extremely low frequency magnetic fields found on cytotoxic activities and cytokine production of human peripheral blood mononuclear cells in vitro med./bio.

Published in: Bioelectromagnetics 2003; 24 (1): 21-31

Aim of study (acc. to author)

To study the effects of the exposure to extremely low frequency magnetic fields on the immunological functions (cytokine production and cytotoxicity activity) of human peripheral blood mononuclear cells.

Endpoint

Exposure

Exposure Parameters
Exposure 1: 50 Hz
Exposure duration: 24 h
Exposure 2: 60 Hz
Exposure duration: 24 h

Exposure 1

Main characteristics
Frequency 50 Hz
Type
Exposure duration 24 h
Additional info vertical polarized, circularly polarized and elliptical polarized magnetic fields were used.
Exposure setup
Exposure source
  • 2 pairs of Merritt's 3 square multiple coils
Setup incubator (30 x 30 x 30 cm³) placed at the center of the Merritt's coil system
Additional info Sets of exposure coils were arranged so that two pairs of Merritt's 3 square multiple coils were mutually crossing in the horizontal and vertical directions. A MF was generated by one of the coil sets, while the other set was used for sham exposure.
Parameters
Measurand Value Type Method Mass Remarks
magnetic flux density 500 µT effective value measured - -
magnetic flux density 100 µT effective value measured - 20 µT or 2 µT; vertical polarized
magnetic flux density 354 µT effective value measured - vertical and horizontal component; circularly polarized
magnetic flux density 121 µT effective value measured - horizontal component; elliptical polarization
magnetic flux density 485 mT effective value measured - vertical component; elliptical polarization

Exposure 2

Main characteristics
Frequency 60 Hz
Type
Exposure duration 24 h
