この研究は、市販の携帯電話ばく露源に用いて、ニワトリ胚の神経管の発達に対する携帯電話の影響を評価した。200個のSPFの白色レグホン卵を50個ずつの4群に分けた:第1群(携帯電話ばく露無し)、第2群(待機モードばく露)、第3群(30分毎に10秒間の呼び出しモードばく露)、第4群(60分毎に10分間の通話モードばく露)。各群別にインキュベータ内に並べ、庫内中央の天井付近(卵の上方25cm)に携帯電話を取り付てばく露を行った。SARは0.77W/kgと記述しているが、出力変動、庫内電磁界分布等の検討は記されていない。孵卵中ばく露の30、48、72時間目に各群から一部の卵を取り出し、胚の組織検査を行った。その結果、第3群の30、48時間の標本でTUNEL法の結果が有意に変化した、など各群の様々な変化を報告している。

Fertilized eggs were divided into 4 groups (n=50 per group): 1.) no exposure, 2.) exposed to a mobile phone in the "standby mode", 3.) exposed to a mobile phone in the "calling mode" and 4.) exposed to a mobile phone in the "talking mode". Eggs were opened and examined after 30, 48 or 72 hours.

In group 3, closing of the neural tube was completed only after 72 hours, while in the other groups this developmental stage was already completed after 48 hours.
In tissue slices of the neural tube received from group 3 after 30- and 48-hours exposure, the TUNEL assay showed significantly increased apoptosis rates compared to not exposed tissue slices.
The immunoreactivity of caspase-3 and caspase-8 was highest in group 3 at all time points in comparison to the other groups, while the immunoreactivity of caspase-9 was highest in group 2 after 72-hours exposure.
The authors conclude that exposure to mobile phones could have a deleterious effect on the neural tube development of chick embryos.
