Study type: Medical/biological study (experimental study)

Elliptically polarized magnetic fields do not alter immediate early response genes expression levels in human glioblastoma cells med./bio.

Published in: Bioelectromagnetics 2002; 23 (2): 89-96

Aim of study (acc. to author)

To study the effects of different polarized magnetic fields on the immediate early genes expression in human glioblastoma cells in vitro.

Background/further details

Four types of polarization (vertical, horizontal, circular, elliptical) of the extremely low frequency magnetic field were performed and cells were exposed to different magnetic flux densities.
Positive controls were TPA treated cells.

Main outcome of study (acc. to author)

The exposure to elliptically polarized magnetic fields up to two hours had no statistically significant effects on basal immediate early response gene and housekeeping gene expression. In addition, extremely low frequency magnetic field had no statistically significant effects on basal levels of expression of the immediate early genes and housekeeping genes in either polarisation type.
There was no significant difference in immediate early gene expression between magnetic field exposed and sham exposed cells at different magnetic flux densities of elliptically polarized magnetic fields.
The data do not provide any significant evidence that exposure to extremely low frequency magnetic fields of the human glioblastoma cell line affects immediate early response gene expression at either transcription or translation level.
