この研究は、5月齢のウィスターラット(n=24)を用いて、3mTの電磁界EMF)が海馬に与える影響を実験的に調べた。ばく露群は、1日4時間(午前8時から12時まで)、3mTのEMFばく露を10週間実施した(ばく露方法は抄録には不記載)。ばく露終了後、透過電子顕微鏡(TEM)で海馬組織超微細構造を観察した。その結果、対照群に比べばく露群では、ミトコンドリアなど細胞内器官の形態異常のようなかなり大きな変化が見られ、アポトーシス細胞の数が変化していた、と報告している。

In ultrastructural investigations, hippocampus samples of exposed rats showed some glial cells with a dense core and compact chromatin and mitochondria with vague cristae. Nerve cells in the exposure group were damaged, with compact chromatin and a decreased amount of intracellular organelles. Moreover, vacuoles were visible and intracellular organelles such as the mitochondria were morphologically abnormal and uncertain. In the control group, these features were not detected.
The number of apoptotic cells was significantly increased in the exposure group compared to the control group.
The authors conclude that exposure to a 50 Hz magnetic field might change the ultrastructure and increase apoptosis in the hippocampus of rats.
