The effects of an abdominal exposure of rats to a 900 MHz electromagnetic field on the number of primordial follicles in the ovaries should be investigated.
Primordial follicles represent the primary state of ovarian follicles. They consist of an ovum and a layer of flattened epithelial cells.
Rats were randomly divided into two groups (n=8 each): 1) exposure to the electromagnetic field and 2) sham exposure.
|ばく露時間||continuous for 15 minutes/day for 15 days|
|Repetition frequency||217 Hz|
|チャンバの詳細||radio frequency-shielded room|
|ばく露装置の詳細||the researcher's left hand grasped the rat at the neck and back and the right hand applied the antenna device to the skin of the rat over the ovaries in the lower abdominal area; ambient temperature of 22-26°C and 55-60% humidity|
|Sham exposure||A sham exposure was conducted.|
|Additional information||rats of the sham exposure group were taken from their cages and treated with the antenna in the same manner as rats in the experimental group, but the exposure device was turned off|
No significant differences were found in the body weight and weight of ovaries between exposed and sham exposed rats.
The mean numbers of primordial follicles in the ovaries were significantly lower in exposed rats compared to sham exposed rats.
The authors conclude that an abdominal exposure of rats to a 900 MHz electromagnetic field could reduce the number of primordial follicles in the ovaries.
