Distance between exposed object and exposure source
rats were restrained in a 30 cm Π5 cm Π20 cm (length x width x height) closed box divided into four compartments with holes of 1 cm diameter for ventilation, four rats per box, 2 boxes per exposure
GTEM cell with outer dimensions of 220 cm x 120 cm x 80 cm (length x width x height); microwave chamber is lined with absorbers which minimize the possibility of any reflections; GTEM cell was placed in a temperature controlled room under constant lighting conditions
In all exposure groups, a significant increase in DNA single-strand breaks was found in comparison to the control group. The authors conclude that exposure to microwaves could have a DNA damaging effect in the brain of rats.
