To investigate the effect of electromagnetic fields produced by GSM mobile phones on the antioxidant capacity in the blood of rats.

99 rats were divided into three groups: 1) control group (n=33); 2) exposure group with a fractionate dose of electromagnetic fields (n=42); 3) exposure group with an acute dose of electromagnetic fields (n=24).

Compared to the control group, both exposure groups displayed a reduced plasma concentration of vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamin E, reduced glutathione and significant decreases in catalase and superoxide dismutase enzyme activities. Except for vitamin A, all values were significantly lower in the acute exposure group than the fractionate exposure group.
The authors conclude that exposure to acute doses of electromagnetic field exposure produced by mobile phones is more hazardous than that produced by fractionated doses.
