Effects of 2G and 3G mobile phones on human alpha rhythms: Resting EEG in adolescents, young adults, and the elderly.

この研究は、ヒトのアルファ波リズムに対する第二、第三世代(2G、3G)携帯電話の影響を、思春期層、若年者、高齢者について調べた。被験者は、思春期層(13-15歳:41人)、若年者(19-40歳:42人)、高齢者(55-70歳:20人)とした。これまでの研究を参考に、安静時アルファ波活動(脳電図の8-12Hz 帯)を影響評価指標に選んだと述べている。二重ブラインド・クロスオーバーデザインで、各被験者について擬似ばく露、2Gばく露、3Gばく露の3つの実験を最低でも4日間あけて行い、各実験でのアルファ波活動(基準値に対する相対値)を比較した。その結果、2Gばく露においては、若年者のアルファ波擬似ばく露に比べ大きくなったが、思春期層と高齢者では影響が見られなかった;3Gばく露においては、どの年齢群でも影響が見られなかった、と報告している。

研究目的(著者による)

To study whether adolescents and/or the elderly are more sensitive to mobile phone-related bioeffects than young adults, and to determine this for both 2nd generation (2G) GSM, and 3rd generation (3G) W-CDMA exposures.

41 adolescents (13-15 years), 42 adults (19-40 years), and 20 elderly (55-70 years) were tested. Each participant received sham exposure, 2G and 3G exposures, separated by at least four days.

The data showed that the young adults' alpha wave activity was greater in the 2G exposure compared to sham exposure. However, no effect was found in the adolescent or the elderly groups, and no effect of 3G exposures was found in any group. The data provide further support for an effect of 2G exposures on resting alpha wave activity in young adults, but fail to support a similar enhancement in adolescents or the elderly, or in any age group as a function of 3G exposure.
In conclusion, the data suggest that adolescents may not represent a more sensitive population in terms of mobile phone alpha wave effects, and that the effect on alpha wave may be restricted to 2G cell phones.
