Effects of static and 50 Hz alternating electric fields on superoxide dismutase activity and TBARS levels in guinea pigs med./bio.

Published in: Gen Physiol Biophys 2006; 25 (2): 177-193

Aim of study (acc. to author)

This in vivo study was performed to determine the effects of static and 50 Hz alternating electric fields on lipid peroxidation and superoxide dismutase levels (antioxidant) in different organ tissues of guinea pigs.

Background/further details

Investigations were focused on the influence of different electric field intensities, electric field directions and exposure duration.
140 male guinea pigs were exposed to static electric fields, divided into 14 separate groups of 10 animals each. The control group consisted of 20 guinea pigs. Additionally, 5 groups of 15 male guinea pigs were exposed to 50 Hz.

Main outcome of study (acc. to author)

Statistically significant differences were found in the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and superoxide dismutase contents of plasma and tissues between the exposed groups (static electric field (both vertical and horizontal electric field direction) and 50 Hz alternating electric field ) and control group.
Increase in the electric field intensity or electric field exposure duration resulted in an increase in the thiobarbituric acid reactive substance levels and superoxide dismutase activity detected in plasma and all tissues.
The data obtained indicate that electric field in the range of several kV/m is effective on thiobarbituric acid reactive substance levels and superoxide dismutase activity.
