To study whether a modulated radiofrequency of the type used in cellular phone communications at a specific absorption rate higher than International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) reference level for occupational exposure, could elicit alterations on the three principal cellular processes as cell proliferation, cell differentiation, and apoptosis processes in a neuroblastoma cell line.

Combined exposures to radiofrequency and to the differentiative agent retinoic acid or to the apoptotic inducer camptothecin were carried out to study possible interaction between electromagnetic field and chemical agents.

チャンバの詳細 Four WPCs were placed into two incubators (one for RF and one for sham exposure using blind procedure). Each WPC was shielded by a 40 x 40 x 20 cm metal grid box and four blocks of foam absorber material (15 dB). The absence of any interference between the two WPCs located in the same incubator was confirmed by measurement.
ばく露装置の詳細 The WPCs consisted of two parallel plates short-circuited at the edge at four points [Laval et al., 2002]. Four Petri dishes (3.5 cm in diameter) were placed in each WPC, one of them filled only with medium for monitoring temperature. A water spiral plate jacket was positioned on the external faces of both plates of the WPC with circulating water maintaining a temperature of 37 °C in the medium.
Sham exposure A sham exposure was conducted.
Additional information As a further control, the same number of dishes were placed in another incubator without exposure system.
