The mobile phone was mounted to the left side of the subject's head by a modified helmet assuring a constant distance of 15 mm between the phone and the ear. An identical phone, but without a battery, was positioned on the right side of the head. Both phones were held in the normal position for use with the aerial near the head in the parietotemporal area, about 40 mm from the scalp surface.

All subjects attended two sessions, one week apart, with the phone turned on or turned off, according to a cross-over, double-blind paradigm.
SAR was evaluated in accordance with IEC standards [106/49/,2003] inside a head phantom filled with semi-liquid muscle equivalent material by positioning a miniature field probe 1 cm in depth over a grid of a few millimeters at the minimal distance from the shell under the ear region, with the phone at maximum power positioned at a distance of 15 mm from the ear.
